7 Days in Morocco: A Realistic First-Time Itinerary
Plan seven days in Morocco around Marrakech, the Atlas and Essaouira, with sensible driving times and options for a desert-focused week.
One week in Morocco is enough for a memorable trip when you resist the urge to cross the entire country. The route below combines Marrakech, a taste of the Atlas Mountains and time on the Atlantic coast. It is designed as a flexible first visit rather than a rigid schedule. If your main dream is the dunes of Erg Chebbi, use the alternative described below instead of adding Merzouga to an already full week.
Days 1 and 2: arrive and explore Marrakech
On arrival day, focus on reaching your accommodation and getting oriented. If your riad sits inside the medina, ask where the car stops and how you will find the entrance. Leave the first evening open for a relaxed meal rather than a timed visit.
Use the second day for a few selected sights and a walk through the souks. Group nearby places instead of moving repeatedly across town. Opening hours and ticket arrangements can change, so check them shortly before the visit and reserve time for an unplanned pause.
Days 3 and 4: an Atlas foothills stay
Choose one valley or village according to the season and your appetite for walking. A day trip is possible, but sleeping near your chosen route gives you more time outdoors and fewer hours in a vehicle on a single day. Ask for the exact transfer time from Marrakech.
If you want to hike, discuss the distance, elevation gain and terrain with a local guide. Bring layers because conditions in the mountains may differ from those in Marrakech. For a mixed-ability group, a gentle village walk can be more enjoyable than an ambitious trek.
Days 5 and 6: slow down in Essaouira
Travel to Essaouira and allow the rest of the day for the medina, port area or a walk by the sea. Coastal wind can make it feel cooler than Marrakech, so keep an extra layer in your bag. Avoid promising yourself every nearby attraction on arrival day.
A second night lets you experience the town without spending the whole visit checking the return clock. Choose a long lunch, browse local workshops respectfully and decide whether a beach activity fits the day’s conditions. If you surf, seek local advice on suitable beaches.
Day 7: return for departure
Check your flight time against the transfer to the departure airport. For an early flight from Marrakech, it is usually more comfortable to return the previous evening and sleep near your departure point. For a later flight, leave a generous margin for the road and airport procedures.
You can adjust this route by spending more nights in Marrakech or skipping the mountain overnight. The aim is to have a week that feels like a holiday, with enough time in each place to notice more than its best-known photograph.
If the Sahara is your priority
Merzouga is far from Marrakech and should not be treated as an easy day trip. A week focused on Erg Chebbi may use the first and final nights in a city and several days to cross the Atlas and southeast with an overnight camp. That route leaves little room for Essaouira as well.
Compare the daily driving hours and camp details before committing. If you want both the coast and the Sahara, add more days or accept that the trip will include substantial travel. Make the central experience your first decision, then build the route around it.
